Instructional Design

The Association of Talent Development defines instructional design as, "the practice of creating learning experiences to support long term learning." Instructional designers makes the best use of a learner's time. They identify problems and needs up front; formulate objectives that will address the needs; and deliver the information in an engaging, memorable way. A method to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning experience is built in, so there is no need to wonder about the quality of the materials.

Performance Support Tools for New Students

About this Project

These student support tools were created for Winthrop University's Office of Online Learning (WOOL) as part of a graduate team project. The team included Amber Burtless, Ashlee Chance, Irielle Davis, and me. We performed in-depth analysis of the performance problems new students experience with Blackboard Ultra. We created five tools to address these problems. The performance tool I developed was the Blackboard Ultra Reference Guide, which you may view below.

Systems Map

We made a systems map for Winthrop University's Office of Online Learning in order to understand the office from a systems perspective.

Performance Support Tools

This document details our solutions to the identified performance problems. We came up with five tools: an FAQ, a decision tree, checklists, an infographic, and a quick reference guide.

Identifying Performance Problems

Our team interviewed WOOL, reviewed survey data, and identified the most pressing performance problems.

Final Website

Our team embedded the finished performance tools in a website so that Winthrop Office of Online Learning would have them at their fingertips.

Design Document: Dale's Cone of Experience

The norther lights over snow-capped mountains.
About This Project

Instructional design documents are the blueprints for instructional materials. They include descriptions of the organization and the learners, content or task analyses, goals, learning objectives, and assessments. This design document was created for an eLearning module about Dale's Cone of Experience. You can see the finished project here.

This design document was created for a graduate class.

Front-End Analysis

My front-end analysis included a needs and learner analysis, desired outcomes, and a problem statement.

Instructional Strategies

After the content analysis was completed, I devised instructional strategies for each goal and objective.

Content Analysis

I completed a content analysis for Dale's Cone of Experience to state exactly what was to be learned. This document also defines goals and learning objectives.

Assessment Materials

Here, you will see the assessment questions, which I aligned with the learning objectives.
